A Reading

When we first met we’d stay up all night.
Now, we can’t sleep when we’re apart.
These two insomnias each speak of love,
and the fear it’s all just a dream.

I missed you before I met you,
Like my heart was skipping a beat.
Something was lacking, a phantom limb,
reaching across time and space, to you.

I searched for you, from the moment I knew,
love truly was an option.
The first time I saw you, my heart recognised you,
and I finally felt complete.

Twenty years later we still walk together,
down a path no-one else sees.
No potholes, no detours, no traffic jams,
just the occasional bench for a seat.

We turn our faces to the sun which rose on our love,
all those years ago.
The light of love shines in our eyes,
banishing dark thoughts from our minds.

We each have our demons and we face them together,
our fingers intertwined for support.
Our love is a weapon and we wield it with ease;
you hold my heart in your hands.
